Katherine’s Place, a youth-focused supportive housing development, has opened in Kamloops. The facility has 39 units and will provide residents daily meals, life-skills training, and employment and education supports. The facility has received $13M from BC Housing and will continue to receive $1.6M in annual operating funding.
The District of Lake Country has received $150K in grant funding from the Government of British Columbia for climate adaptation. The funds will be used to conduct a risk assessment and enhance the community’s resilience to extreme weather.
BC Housing and the Nicola Valley Shelter Society have recently opened a new 40-bed homeless shelter in Merritt. The shelter will include two overflow rooms for temporary housing, two overdose prevention sites, an enhanced security system, and support services. BC Housing has leased the property until March 30, 2027.
The Government of British Columbia has started building a new 51-unit supportive housing complex in Vernon to provide homes for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The facility will provide around-the-clock support, daily meals, life-skills training, employment assistance, counselling, physical and mental-health resources, and referrals to addiction treatment and recovery services.
Construction on the North Shore shelter is set to be completed by the end of January 2025. Operated by ASK Wellness, the 44-bed shelter is funded through the provincial Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing program and will receive funding until March 31, 2026. The shelter will have at least three staff members on site at all times, with a housing outreach worker assisting individuals find housing when available.
The City of Kamloops is awarding roughly $128K to 11 non-profit organizations through the Social and Community Development Grants. The funding will support operational costs, special projects, and other expenditures that address social issues.
