The federal government is not renewing the contracts for 800 Public Health Agency of Canada employees across Canada, including 245 workers at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. Contracts with temporary workers will not be renewed as funding for COVID-19 response ends. However, some long-term employees are also losing their positions according to the Union of Health and Environment Workers.

The federal government is providing $24.1M over five years to Red River College Polytechnic to lead a national innovation network as part of a $95.3M strategy to boost entrepreneurship. The federal government has confirmed that the headquarters of the new Canada Water Agency will be located in downtown Winnipeg. Last year, the government committed $85.1M over five years to establish the agency, which will guide water policy and fund water protection programs. The Winnipeg office will employ about 100 people.
The governments of Canada and Manitoba are providing a combined $986,000 to Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad, a Winnipeg organization serving at-risk youth. The funds will be used to provide programming and public health services at Tina's Safe Haven, the non-profit's 24-hour drop-in centre.
