*What is the Role?*
*Legal Counsel (Lawyer)* plays a leadership role in the delivery of the VSA?s purpose of building public confidence in the BC motor dealer industry by engaging and educating industry and consumers, ensuring a safe and reliable motor vehicle buying experience.
The Lawyer will provide ongoing general legal advice and services to the VSA. This role requires the individual to carry out their duties in an unbiased, professional, courteous, and timely manner while adhering to the principles of administrative fairness.
*What You'll Do:*
The key accountabilities and deliverables of the Lawyer include:
* Participate in developing strategic goals, initiatives, and the departmental budget,
* Monitor the VSA?s administration of the legislation and advise of any policy concerns about the interpretation and application of the legislation,
* Coach, mentor, and performance manage the paralegal,
* Supervise and provide legal advice on complex investigations, ensuring the investigation is completed thoroughly, on time, is legally defensible and procedurally fair,
* Legally vet all proposed regulatory actions for legal correctness and that there is a reasonable prospect of success,
* Review all legal documents for legal accuracy, such as notices of hearings, undertakings, license conditions and warnings letters,
* Prepare and present the VSA case at Registrar hearings, and where requested, before the Motor Dealer Customer Compensation Fund Board, in a professional, objective, and unbiased manner,
* Provide legal advice to all departments, and the VSA in general,
* Support the Privacy Officer with access to records requests and other matters relating to privacy at the VSA,
* Develop, measure and report on metrics and KPIs that demonstrate performance against defined service levels and the overall effectiveness of operations,
* Represent the VSA and the Motor Dealer Customer Compensation Fund Board as legal counsel in court, such as on judicial reviews, and
* Other duties, as may be assigned by the President.
